I always had more studies than I could handle. The bulk of them always came from evening Witnessing. I always thought the main problem with lack of studies was due to working territory for years only between the hours of 9-11am. No one is home during those times. Then the bulk of the work on Saturday mostly consisted of publishers not really wanting to go further than placing a magazine or two. It’s was easy to get studies but most people really didn’t want the burden. The remaining few didn’t have the time.
When I was young I pointed out the folly of just working territories vs. trying to reach people. An Elder told me that if Jehovah really wanted them to find the truth they would get sick and miss work. Then they would be available during 9-11am…

Bible Studies...how hard, how rare, anybody know a JW with one???
by oompa ini find it interesting how many dubs of even 50 years old have never had a bible study (yet they go out most sat morns.
for two hours and turn in the slip) ...and how many dubs really want one?

I lived next to the Barrs in the Towers. He was so nice but I did get the impression that he wasn’t a forceful man. At the time I looked up to him as being meek.
When Barbara says he was considered wimpy I remember is handshake. Definitely not what you would call mans man. I always assumed he had a stroke or something because of the way he held his hands. I never dealt with him other than being neighbors but I never got the impression he would stand up for much of anything. One GB Helper told me Barr was faithful but the Org needs ‘Operations’ men. And Barr was not Operations. -

I may be biased but let your family make excuses for now. I will until I have some sort of support structure that is not dependent on my prevouis life.
To be honest I read comments on this forum from time to time. Every time I did I felt like I was going to puke. Even today I’m a little uneasy.
Also every time I hear negative comments about JW’s they feel like fight’n words. Just using the term “JW’s” is hard, it sounds unrespectful.
The only tool I have to feel like less of a traitor is humor. I know I should discuss some sincere biblical insight that maybe the Society has wrong. But instead I need to ask questions like:

I totally understand. When I as at Bethel I had a father figure who was on a few committees. He arranged without my knowledge to have me transferred to his congregation and table. Over time he really made a sincere effort to groom me and show me the ropes. The sad thing is that it probably made me cynical over time since I heard a little too much about day to day Org business. If I had just been assigned to laundry I would probably still be there today.

Your comment made me think of the first time I got in trouble at Bethel (Yes, I got in trouble more than once). I had to enter an area that required a key, vs. just flashing your badge at the building entrance. Anyway I had back pain because of a minor injury and happened to be lugging a full backpack along with a large box full of stuff. A sister carrying what I could call a cocktail purse was ahead of me. Once she got to the door she just stopped. I thought “Are you kidding me!” Tradition was that brothers opened the door. But here I am carrying half my body weight and she expects me to set everything down to open the door. Of course I said “Would it be too much of a bother for you to pull your key out and open the door?” She just stood her ground. No less than 20mins later I got called in to visit a Vice-President. After about an hour I understood that she was “somebody’s” wife and that I need to appreciate the sister’s status as a “weaker vessel”. But inside I was screaming “BUT I OPENED THE DOOR!” -

Bonafide,Your comment is the only remotely positive comment I have ever heard about Jaracz. He was definitely my least favorite GB. In many ways he was just a jerk. At the time I told myself he must be under allot of pressure. But looking back he was just an asshole.

What crazy demonstrations did you see on the Service Meeting?

i know a lot of congregations that did this one.
we had a long table facing the audience, and we gave the "theocratic news" from the km as if it were a tv news broadcast.

My favorite was a Brother who had been counseled to kind of ‘spice things up a little”. He was extremely boring on stage.
His next talk involved something like ‘Proper tools at the proper time’ or something. During his talk he pulled tools out of his suit. First it was pair of tweezers. Then a small screwdriver out of his pocket. Then a large allen wrench. Then an even bigger wrench out of his jacket. Out of nowhere the biggest socket wrench I had ever seen appeared. Then from under his sleeve he somehow pulled out a hack saw.
By this time everyone was either on edge or cracking up. Then the coup de grace. He reached behind and underneath his jacket and pulled, out of his pants mind you, a sledgehammer. Half the congregation was stunned. The other half started uncontrollably laughing. One brother went into laughing fits and was asked to go outside when he couldn’t stop. -

I just opened a Facebook account. But I have no friends though
I met some people at work and they all have Facebook accounts. But I don't want to invite them and seem like a total loser. They all have 100's of friends. I have zero.

"Hey Bro, remember when we went to Cancun! That was awsome!" vs. "Hey Bro, remember when we worked that unassigned territory! That was awsome!"

Does the Governing Body require a minimum number of members/quorum?
by yadda yadda 2 inthe governing body presently comprises nine members.
some decades ago it was up to about 18 members, i think.
how low can the number go?

There really is no max or min limit on the GB. If a seat is vacated that does not automatically trigger a vote to add someone. The problem they do have is finding replacements, it’s a dwindling gene pool. There are only so many anointed, trusted, men that have the full time service credentials. In addition these candidates must have proven that they are truly “Company” men.
In the early 90’s non-anointed “Helpers” started taking over responsibilities that had been exclusively the responsibility of anointed ones. They are called “Given Ones” or “Nethinim”. The bulk of the work is now done by them and other non-anointed.
As far as power goes the GB of today is not as influential as it used to be. Some because of health are not that involved. Out of the remainder some are really not that bright. Then a couple more are not really equipped with enough education or real life experience to contribute to any major decision. Over time I think we’ll see a continued slow shift to the Helpers. They have the numbers and the brains. This would leave the GB with being more of a figure head group whose only power is it veto any doctrinal changes.
